Platoro is Spanish for ‘silver + gold’ – plata/silver – oro/gold. This also is the name we gave our members, The Platoro Group.
Our group started in summer of 2004 near the remote wilderness town of Platoro Colorado. It is an historic mining town nestled deep in the San Juan Mountains. This area has been mined for silver and gold since the early 1880s. There is active mining to this very day. At nearly 10,000 feet, the Platoro dam and reservoir are located northwest of the town. It is the highest ‘man-made’ body of water in the United States.
If you’ve never been there, then we encourage you to make plans and go. For many, it has proven to be the wilderness experience of a lifetime. Your trip will be filled with all the wonders and dangers of the Old West! It is like stepping back in time to a real (rugged) ghost town straight out of the movies! However, it is remote. Plan accordingly and be prepared to experience one of the best kept secrets of Colorado. But if you really don’t like the beauty of the outdoors, fresh air, hunting, fishing, horse back riding, panning, and yes – looking for treasures, this might not be your favorite place!
We were just on the other side of Stunner Pass, just north of Platoro, when we started our search. We have be searching to this very day.
