Platoro is Spanish for ‘silver + gold’ – plata/silver – oro/gold. That is what we began calling our bunch, The Platoro Group.
Our group started in summer of 2004 near the remote wilderness town of Platoro Colorado. It is an historic mining town nestled deep in the San Juan Mountains. This area has been mined for silver and gold since the early 1880s. There is active mining to this very day. At nearly 10,000 feet, the Platoro dam and reservoir are located northwest of the town. It is the highest ‘man-made’ body of water in the United States.
If you have never been there, then we encourage you to plan and go. It has always been a true wilderness experience filled with all the wonders and dangers of the old west. It is like stepping back in time to a real (rugged) town straight out of the movies! However, it is remote. There are many things to consider and planning or course. But if you like beauty, fresh air, hunting, fishing, horse back riding, panning, and yes – looking for treasures, this is the place to be.
We were just on the other side of Stunner Pass, just north of Platoro, when we started our search. We have be searching to this very day.
